Launch of Revised Clinical Performance Instruments (CPI 3.0) for PT and PTA Students on May 15
The PT and PTA CPI 3.0 are scheduled to launch on May 15, 2023. A psychometric review of the CPIs and the revisions were completed in November 2022. Since November, Competency.AI has been building the revised tools in a modern technology platform. The Clinical Site Information Form (CSIF) will also be on the new platform and has been revised and integrated with CPI as an opt out feature. A separate subscription for CSIF is no longer required unless a program chooses to not subscribe to CPI.
When the system goes live, access will be managed through the APTA log in process, which is the same process used to access the APTA Learning Center courses. If you have a current or previous APTA account (member or non-member) and do not have access, please email, membersuccess@apta.org or call 800-999-APTA (2782) to reset your account. If you have never had an account with APTA, you can create one for free here. When you have completed the training in the APTA Learning Center, the CPI system will grant you access to the new platform, based on your user role. User roles are aligned with specific training modules. User roles in the new system are: DCE/ACCE, assistant/associate DCE/ACCE, Adjunct Faculty, Administrative/Secretarial Staff, CI, SCCE, and Student. Administrative/Secretarial Staff do not need to complete a training module. The DCE can grant the Administrative/Secretarial Staff access by adding them to the system.
The revisions build on the validity and reliability evidence of the existing tools. The intended uses of the CPI (formative, summative, inappropriate use) were identified, and proficiency domains were aligned with current CAPTE standards, FSBPT practice analyses, and the revised Guide to Physical Therapist Practice. Based on feedback from interviews, focus groups, workshops, and a national survey, these tools were revised to reduce redundancy and improve scoring accuracy. The PT CPI was modified from 18 domains to 12, and the PTA CPI was modified from 14 domains to 11. A paper example of the revised tools and rater instructions can be found at this link. A technical brief describing the phases of work and rationale for changes has also been shared on APTA’s website.
The current PT and PTA CPI 2.0, CSIF, and Technology Platform sunset on September 30, 2023. For those programs that have students finishing rotations over the summer through early fall, be aware of this hard stop date. If you have questions about the transition, please reach out to APTA staff at CPI2023@apta.org.
Training for PT and PTA CPI 3.0 Launched April 7
Five courses specific to PT and PTA CPI 3.0 can be found in the APTA Learning Center. These courses are specific to a user role and are required before one can access CPI 3.0 in the new platform hosted by Competency.AI, so select the course that is most appropriate for your role. These courses are free. Log in to APTA Learning Center to access these courses. Search “CPI 3.0” for the list of courses.
Each course includes a narrated video, 20-28 minutes in length. The videos allow participants to pause or rewind but do not allow them to fast forward. The assessment includes 16-21 questions depending on the course version. Participants must score 100% on the assessment to receive their certificate of completion. The assessment can be taken as many times as needed to achieve the passing score. DCEs will have the ability in their CPI dashboard to see which students and CIs have completed the training.
Course/Link:
The CI/SCCE and DCE courses include 1.5 hours/0.15 CEUs, which are approved in all jurisdictions except Ohio. APTA has applied for approval for the CI/SCCE course from Ohio.
Subscribing to CPI for the July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024 Cycle
All CPI 2.0 and CSIF subscriptions for the July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023 cycle will expire in two months regardless of when the program paid the subscription fee. Continued use of CPI 2.0 and/or CPI 3.0 beyond the cycle end date requires a subscription renewal through APTA for the July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024 cycle. If your program plans to use either CPI 2.0 or 3.0 beyond June 30, and you have not already requested an invoice from APTA and made payment arrangements with program staff, please do so soon to avoid disruption in access. Note to DCEs: Your invoice request alerts staff to grant your program access during the May 15-June 30 period before the next subscription cycle begins.
Exporting CPI 2.0 Data before September 30, 2023
To prepare for the sunset of the PT and PTA CPI 2.0 and current CSIF, Liaison recommends exporting your CPI data for your records. We created a slide deck with step-by-step instructions on how to do this and the information has been posted in the APTA Clinical Assessment Help Center. You can also click here for a quick link to the slide deck (See slide deck link in the bottom right corner): Customer Support - Liaison (liaisonedu.com). Programs are encouraged to review the guidance and ensure they are comfortable with exporting data before the September 30 sunset date. If you have questions about how to export your data, please contact Taj Tucker at ttucker@liaisonedu.com.
